Austin summers don’t ease up. From late May into September, temperatures regularly push past 100°F, and your air conditioning system isn’t running a few hours a day — it’s running most of the day, every day, for months at a stretch. That’s a completely different kind of demand than what you’d see in most parts of the country, and it means the way your AC is diagnosed, maintained, and repaired matters a lot more here than it would somewhere with milder summers.

Air Motions Heating & Air Conditioning of Central Texas serves Austin and the surrounding area with honest, thorough air conditioning service, repair, maintenance, installation, and more.

Air Conditioning Services We Provide in Austin

We handle the full range of residential AC service. Here’s what each of those looks like in practice.

AC Repair

When your system isn’t cooling the way it should, or stops working altogether, we come out, diagnose the actual problem, and explain what we found before we even attempt to repair you AC system. Austin’s extreme summers put more wear on capacitors, contactors, refrigerant lines, and blower motors than what those components see in milder climates. A lot of what looks like a major failure is actually a worn part that’s $200 to fix, not $8,000 to replace. We’ll tell you which one it is.

AC Maintenance & Tune-Ups

A system that runs 14–18 hours a day through a Texas summer is going to show wear. Annual HVAC maintenance, ideally in early spring before the heat kicks in, catches low refrigerant, dirty coils, and marginal capacitors before they cause a breakdown in July. We do a thorough check of every component that matters, clean what needs cleaning, and tell you what we’re looking at.

AC Installation & Replacement

When it’s time to install a new HVAC system, the two things that matter most are proper sizing and honest guidance. We do a Manual J load calculation before recommending a system size, which accounts for your home’s square footage, ceiling height, insulation, window area, and sun exposure. Austin’s mix of older Hyde Park bungalows and newer suburban homes means that square footage alone doesn’t tell the story. We recommend what your home actually needs.

Emergency AC Repair

When your AC goes out on a 104°F Tuesday afternoon, that’s not something you can wait two or three days on. We prioritize emergency AC calls during peak heat and will give you an honest arrival window when you call. We don’t make promises we can’t keep on scheduling, and we don’t leave until the system is running.

Ductless Mini Split

Mini-splits are an increasingly popular option in Austin, especially for additions, garage conversions, casitas, and ADUs where running ductwork doesn’t make sense. They’re also a practical solution for older Austin homes where the original duct system is undersized or beyond repair. We install, maintain, and repair all major mini-split brands.

Why Austin’s Climate Is Hard on Air Conditioning Equipment

It’s worth understanding why HVAC services in Austin looks different from what you’d get in, say, Denver or Portland. The climate here creates specific stress patterns on equipment that accelerate wear.

  • Runtime: During June, July, and August, an AC system in Austin commonly runs 14–18 hours a day. A system that would last 15 years in a milder climate may need its first major repairs in 8–10 years here simply because of accumulated run hours.
  • Heat Load: Attic temperatures in Central Texas regularly exceed 130°F in summer. In single-story homes, which make up a large part of Austin’s housing stock, the ceiling is essentially one barrier between 130-degree air and your living space. Systems have to work harder to overcome that heat load, which puts more stress on compressors and coils.
  • Humidity: Austin’s summers bring real humidity alongside the heat, especially in June before the drier pattern sets in. Your AC does double duty, cooling the air and removing moisture. When humidity is high, the system has to work harder, and condensate drains can clog more quickly.
  • February Conditions: After the February 2021 freeze, Austin homeowners know that heating matters too. Systems with heat pumps that weren’t properly maintained struggled through that event. We service heating systems year-round and recommend a fall check-up for that reason.

How Do I Know If My AC Needs Repair or Replacement?

This is the question we get most often, and the honest answer depends on your specific situation, not a formula.

Repair usually makes sense when:

  • Your system is under 10–12 years old and the problem involves a single component (capacitor, contactor, refrigerant recharge, fan motor)
  • The repair cost is less than 30–40% of what a comparable new system would run
  • Your system is R-410A refrigerant (or an A2L compatible refrigerant for newer systems)

Replacement is worth considering when:

  • Your system is 12–15+ years old and the repair involves a major component like the compressor or evaporator coil
  • You’ve had multiple repairs in the last 2–3 seasons
  • Your system uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured and increasingly expensive to source
  • Energy bills have been creeping up even though usage patterns haven’t changed

We’ll give you honest numbers on both options and let you decide. We’re not going to push a new system when a well-targeted repair will solve the problem.

The process was great. The inital visit and meeting was with Steve, whom we found very informative and knowable. We recevied a quote and agreed to purchase the 3 Ton Lennox HVAC option. The installer was Christian, who did a very professional install. He removed the old equpment, and installed the Lennox equipment. Post installation, he perfomed the system checkout, and the equipment is performing well. R

I recently had both of my HVAC systems replaced by Air Motions. After taking 7 bids on the job I decided to go with Air Motions because of the no-nonsense approach that Steve took in pricing, and his expertise in recommending system sizing and features that would work best for my needs. They had me scheduled for an install within 2 business days of my approval to move forward with the work. On installation day a crew of 2 was sent to do the work. Brian, the lead on the crew was great! He went out of his was to ensure the pre-existing issues in old configuration were corrected while installing the new system. Both he and his assistant Rico worked diligently for 13+ hours (with no lunch break) to ensure the job was completed, and done right, by the end of the day. I was very happy with the entire experience from bid through job completion. I will be recommending Air Motions to my family and friends when they are considering system replacement. My only critique would be that the amount of work in replacing 2 entire residential HVAC systems is too much work for a two man crew. While the installation team stayed focused and very professional throughout the job I could tell they were getting a bit frustrated in the later hours of the night. Even though they worked through their lunch break they did not finish until after 10 pm. Perhaps an extra assistant for even a few hours may have allowed them to finish their day in a reasonable amount of time.
