Common AC Problems We Diagnose and Repair in Austin
Austin’s summers put air conditioning equipment under more stress than most places in the country. A system running 14–18 hours a day through a Texas summer accumulates wear faster than the same equipment in a milder climate. Here’s what we see most often.

Warm Air Blowing From The Vents
The system runs, but the house won’t cool. This is the most common call we get. The three most likely causes are low refrigerant (the system can’t effectively transfer heat), a dirty or blocked condenser coil on the outdoor unit (same problem, different cause), or a failing capacitor that’s reducing compressor efficiency. All three are repairable without replacing the system. We diagnose which one it is before recommending anything.
The AC Short-Cycles: Turns On and Off Too Frequently
A system that cycles on and off every few minutes instead of running a full cooling cycle usually has one of three problems: an oversized system for the space, a refrigerant issue, or a failing thermostat. In Austin homes with vaulted ceilings or large open floor plans, we sometimes also find ductwork pressure imbalances contributing to this. Short-cycling accelerates wear on the compressor, it’s worth addressing before it causes a larger failure.
The Unit Won’t Start or Kicks On Then Off Immediately
A system that won’t start at all typically points to the capacitor, contactor, or control board. Capacitors and contactors are among the most common repair items in Austin, partly because the heat here pushes them to their limits faster than average. These are straightforward repairs, usually completed in a single visit.
Frozen Evaporator Coil
A frozen coil is counterintuitive, ice on your AC in the middle of summer, but it’s not uncommon. It happens when airflow is restricted (a dirty air filter or a blocked return vent is often the culprit) or when refrigerant is low. A frozen coil means the system can’t cool, and running it in that condition can damage the compressor. We’ll identify the root cause, not just thaw the coil and leave.
Refrigerant Leak
Low refrigerant is almost always the result of a leak somewhere in the system, it doesn’t “run out” on its own. Simply recharging without finding and fixing the leak means you’ll be back in the same situation in a few months. Our Austin AC experts locate the leak, repair it, and then recharge the system to the correct specification. We handle both the older R-22 refrigerant (still found in systems installed before 2010) and R-410A and the newer A2L refrigerants for modern equipment.
Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping
An AC that repeatedly trips the breaker is usually a sign the compressor is drawing too much current, often because it’s struggling due to a refrigerant issue or electrical component failure. Resetting the breaker and hoping it holds isn’t a fix. This needs a proper diagnosis to determine whether the issue is with the compressor, the capacitor, the contactor, or wiring. We’ll find it.

What Austin’s Climate Does to AC Equipment
Central Texas AC systems don’t have it easy. A few specific factors accelerate wear here compared to most of the country.
- Runtime Hours: When outdoor temperatures are over 100°F for days at a stretch, your system may run 14–18 hours a day. That’s double what the same equipment would log in a city with cooler summers. Capacitors, contractors, and fan motors have rated lifespans measured in run hours — and they hit those limits faster here.
- Attic Heat Load: Attic temperatures in Austin regularly exceed 130°F in summer. That radiant heat load bears down on your ceiling and forces your AC to work harder to maintain indoor temperature. Systems that are marginally sized, or that have duct leaks pulling hot attic air into the supply stream, struggle disproportionately.
- Hard Water & Humidity: Austin’s water supply is on the harder end of the spectrum, which accelerates scale buildup in drain pans and drain lines. Combined with summer humidity, condensate drains can clog more quickly here than in drier climates, causing backup and water damage if not caught during maintenance.
This is why the same repair call in Austin is more urgent than it would be somewhere else. A marginal capacitor that might last another few weeks in Denver will fail in two days here.
Should You Repair or Replace Your AC in Austin?
We get asked this question on almost every service call for systems over 10 years old, and we answer it honestly, even when the honest answer is “repair it.”
Repair makes more sense when:
- Your system is under 10–12 years old and the problem is an isolated component failure (capacitor, contactor, fan motor, refrigerant recharge)
- The repair cost is less than 30–40% of a comparable new system
- You’re on R-410A or a newer refrigerant (not R-22)
Replacement is worth taking seriously when:
- Your system is 12–15+ years old and the repair involves the compressor or evaporator coil
- You’ve had two or more significant repairs in the last 2–3 seasons
- The system uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced and increasingly expensive to source
- Your energy bills have been climbing without a change in usage, a sign the system is running inefficiently even when it appears to be working
We’ll give you real numbers on both options and let you make the call. We’re not going to recommend a new system to avoid doing a repair.
